U.S. President George W. Bush has met Australian Prime Minister John Howard in Sydney ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Leaders' meeting.

President Bush arrived amid tight security in Sydney after a brief visit to Iraq. There, he mentioned possible U.S. troop cuts in the country if the security situation improves.

Bush and Howard discussed progress in Iraq as well as a new defense deal. Howard's deputy has said Australia will keep its soldiers in Iraq despite popular pressure for their withdrawal.

Trade and climate change are likely to top the agenda at the APEC Economic Leaders meeting. And Bush will call for a worded pledge to reinvigorate the Doha round of world trade talks.
