US President George W. Bush made a surprise visit to Iraq Monday for a final review of what's happening on the ground before his showdown with Congress over the rise in the number of US troops deployed there.
President Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the national security team secretly flew to an air base in a remote part of Anbar province, west of Baghdad.
The president has often referred to the Anbar province, home to roughly ten-thousand US troops as a sign the troop surge is working to create political cooperation between tribal and local leaders, unified against al-Qaida.
After hearing from senior US officials and Iraqi leaders, Bush said some US troops could be sent home if security conditions across Iraq continue to improve.
