South Korean protesters gathered in front of the White House Thursday, demanding Abe formally apologize for the suffering of those comfort women.

Last month Abe denied there was proof the Japanese government or the military had forced the women to work in military brothels during the second world war.

Bush is unlikely to raise the topic during Abe's stay. But the Japanese Prime Minister's critics rallied to demand Japan apologize for forcing the women to serve as sex slaves.

Okcho Soh, president coalition of comfort women, said, "Let the comfort women speak. They are old and dying That's what we want. Down straight, very clear and simple."

A former comfort woman walked to the White House gates with fellow protesters to register her desire for a clear apology.

Lee Young-Soo, S.Korean comfort woman, said, "What I want from the Prime Minister is sincerity, a recognition of the actual situation and a formal apology and legal compensation."

Abe has apologized repeatedly for the suffering of the comfort women. He has stressed he stands by a 1993 apology acknowledging official involvement.

Abe's first U.S. trip as prime minister comes as lawmakers consider a nonbinding resolution urging Japan to formally apologize for its role in coercing women into sexual slavery.
