Russia slams US anti-missile systems in Central Europe

The Chief of the Russian army's general staff has slammed US plans to set up anti-missile systems in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Yuri Baluyevsky has also warned that Russia may target facilities it sees as posing a threat to the country's security. Moscow has been critical of US plans to set up defense systems in Central Europe. But Tuesday's comments at a news conference are the harshest in months.

They come just a day after US Defense Secretary, Robert Gates, held talks with top Russian officials in Moscow.

Washington continues to maintain that the anti-missile systems only aim to counter the threat of possible attacks from what it calls "rogue states". But Russia claims such facilities can only undermine the European balance of military power.
