U.S. fails to convince Russia on missile shield in Europe

The United States has failed to resolve differences with Russia on a planned extension of US anti-missile defenses in Europe. This, despite an offer from Washington to work with Moscow in countering what the US calls the threat of long-range missile attacks.

After talks between NATO allies and Russia on Thursday, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, says there's a clear divide on the perception of a threat.

Russia's ambassador to NATO, General Konstantin Totsky, says it is not easy for his country to accept such a deployment, which would be the first since the end of the Cold War. Russia also objects to the fact the decision was taken unilaterally.

NATO allies and Russia will resume discussions next week, at a meeting for foreign ministers in Norway's capital, Oslo.
