The UN Security Council will meet on Wednesday to discuss possible sanctions against Iran. Meanwhile, Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has said he wants to attend a meeting of the UN Security Council to defend his country's nuclear programme.

The five permanent Security Council members plus Germany are discussing new sanctions against Iran for its nuclear programme. They plan to deliver a draft resolution to the 15-member Security Council on Wednesday, in hopes of a vote within a week.

After more then two weeks of talks, the six negotiators say they are close to agreement.

But China's ambassador to the UN, Wang Guangya, says they've yet to reach consensus over which Iranian officials and organizations should be made subject to financial sanctions.
