Sean Mccormick, spokesman US State Department, said, "The United States does not support independence for Taiwan. President Bush has repeatedly underscored his opposition to unilateral changes to the status quo by either Taipei or Beijing as these threaten regional peace and stability. Rhetoric that could raise doubts about these commitments is unhelpful. "
Mainland officials say Chen Shui-bian's new policy is meant to divert focus on his own failures by raising cross-Strait tensions. What's more, it will harm millions of people -- all in order for a single person's gain. As such, it should be scorned by all Chinese.
Ma Ying-Jeou, former KMT party leader, said, "We don't understand why Chen said that. Why is there a need to become independent? However, he sometimes forgets what he says. So we'd better wait and see what exactly Chen wants to do. "
Officials say the mainland will continue to work with the uttermost sincerity to promote cross-Strait relations. But the central government will also keep a close watch on Chen, and never tolerate any secessionist activities.
