With safety and security a hot global issue, the US and Pakistan are seeking cooperation to counter an expected spring offensive by Taliban militants.

During a brief visit to Pakistan, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates described the country as a "very strong ally" in Washington's war on terrorism.

On Monday, Gates and Pakistani President Musharraf discussed how to exert more pressure on militants along the border with Afghanistan. The area is a possible hiding place for al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden.

Gates said, "We talked about the importance of seizing the offensive this spring to deal Taliban and al-Qaida a strategic setback."

Gates acknowledged that US neglect of Afghanistan had benefited Al-Qaeda and regional terrorism.

Gates said, "We won't make that mistake again. We are here for the long haul."

Taliban fighters are expected to step up attacks when warmer weather melts snow in the mountain passes used by the insurgents infiltrating from Pakistan.
