At Tuesday's Foreign Ministry press conference, the spokesman said five Chinese workers kidnapped in Nigeria were safe.

Liu Jianchao, Foreign Ministry spokesman, said, "The Chinese government and Chinese Embassy in Nigeria are trying all efforts to free the hostages. For the sake of the rescue work, I can't give more details for the moment. But the five Chinese nationals are safe. "

The kidnappers are reported to have been in contact with the Nigerian police. They demanded a ransom, but did not specify the amount. The whereabouts of the hostages remains unknown. The Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has said he will take personal responsibility for the early release of the hostages.
