Reports say Nigerian police have been in contact with the kidnappers of five Chinese workers. They said a ransom was demanded but have not specified the amount. The location of the hostages remains unknown.

A task force from the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria is working closely with local police and has identified the kidnappers. Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday said he himself would assume responsibility for the early release of the five Chinese telecommunication workers.

He also promised that the Nigerian government at all levels as well as the police would do their best to free the workers.
