The United Nations envoy in Somalia has urged the UN Security Council to call for an immediate ceasefire between Ethiopian forces backing Somalia's government and Islamic militia.

Francois Lonseny Fall, the UN Secretary General's representative in Somalia made the call at an emergency council meeting. He said fighting has expanded across an area spanning four hundred kilometers. United Nations has been forced to evacuate the affected region and assistance to two million people has been halted. Fall also said that conflict now involves foreign forces and the use of heavy weapons and aircraft. Qatar, which currently holds the council presidency circulated a statement to members calling for foreign forces to withdraw immediately and for peace talks to resume without delay.
