Iran has reacted strongly to the just-passed UN resolution authorizing sanctions against the country for refusing to stop enriching uranium. Iranian leaders are condemning it as "a piece of torn paper" and say sanctions do not scare Iran. Instead, they've pledged to accelerate uranium enrichment work immediately.

Iran's President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said the Security Council would regret voting in favor of sanctions. He said the West missed its chance to make amends with his country.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said, "We are sorry for you because you missed the opportunity of being a friend of the Iranian nation. We had told you, we had advised you about this. You know that you are not able to do even a little harm to the Iranian nation."

Echoing Ahmadinejad's words, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman has branded United Nation sanctions resolution illegal and unjust.

Mohammad Ali Hosseini, spokesman Iranian Foreign Ministry, said, "Because we don't believe that this resolution has gone down the right legal path, we are not bound to implement it. And we will continue our peaceful nuclear activities, and this resolution will not create any problems on Iran's nuclear path."

Meanwhile, some Tehran residents also denounced the UN resolution against Iran.

Ali Pourhosseini, university student, said, "This resolution is political and beyond the international regulations. We should continue our activities within the Non Proliferation Treaty and should not pay attention to the nuclear apartheid driven by the Western powers."

Iran insists its nuclear programme is aimed solely at the peaceful production of nuclear energy, but the Americans and Europeans suspect Tehran's ultimate goal is the production of nuclear weapons.
