Hundreds of British police officers have been drafted in from around the country to hunt down a serial killer. The killer is suspected of murdering 5 prostitutes in an English town in two weeks since December 2nd.

The naked bodies of 5 young women have been found around the town of Ipswich and the gruesome incidents have spread fear in the normally tranquil Suffolk town in eastern England.

A massive investigation was launched on December 2nd when a female body was found in a stream near Ipswich. Six days later, a 19-year-old girl's body turned up in the same stream. Soon after, another two victims, both aged 24, were found one was strangled and the other was killed by compression to the neck.

The killer has been dubbed "the Suffolk Strangler," although the precise way that all of the women died has yet to be established.

A senior police chief told a news conference that he did not think the killer or killers were taunting the police.

Stewart Gull, detective chief superintendent, said, "I don't know that the persons responsible so again we have to keep an open mind."

But whoever is responsible for the murders, women in Ipswich are feeling vulnerable with the killer still at large.

The case has echoes of those involving in the 19th century prostitute killer Jack the Ripper, who was never caught And Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper who killed 13 women, mainly prostitutes, in northern England between 1975 and 1980.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has expressed his horror over the situation and pledged full support for the investigation.
