Most of the buildings collapsed, and landslides brought buried others. Roads were blocked, and water and power were cut off.

This is an end for the many who lost their lives, but this is also a beginning for those who survived to rebuild their lives and pursue a better future.

Hu Jintao, Chinese President, said, "In the face of the massive disaster, the Chinese people formed the fastest and biggest disaster relief in the country's history with amazingly strong will, great courage and strength. We saved as many victims as we could, and kept the damage to a minimum. The disaster relief is a complete success."

The President expressed respect and gratitude to all those who have participated in the relief and reconstruction efforts-- civilians, the military and the international community.

Over 100 thousand volunteers went to the quake zone to help in relief, rebuilding and psychological counseling. Sichuan has received 76 billion yuan in donations from people all over the country.
