China marks 1st quake anniversary

Chinese president Hu Jintao said, "In the face of the massive disaster, the Chinese people formed the fastest and biggest disaster relief in the country's history with amazingly strong will, great courage and strength. We saved as many victims as we could, and kept the damage to a minimum. The disaster relief is a complete success."

The President expressed respect and gratitude to all those who have participated in the relief and reconstruction efforts-- civilians, the military and the international community.

Over 100 thousand volunteers went to the quake zone to help in relief, rebuilding and psychological counseling. Sichuan has received 76 billion yuan in donations from people all over the country.

Since the disaster, the whole country has united with Sichuan.

Chinese president Hu Jintao said, "China immediately launched the post-quake reconstruction based on the principles of 'putting people first and respecting nature,' and has since made remarkable achievements in rebuilding residential homes and public facilities, including schools and hospitals, as well as in industrial reconstruction and restructuring, historical and cultural protection and ecological recovery."

Hu Jintao urged efforts to finish post-quake reconstruction targets and tasks next year. He also called for the recovery of public services and local industries. Priority should be given to restoring basic living facilities and infrastructure and making sure survivors could move into new permanent homes as soon as possible.

The use of the quake relief and reconstruction funds and goods should be closely monitored.

On the anniversary of the national tragedy, mourning loss and the past is necessary. But it's also important to let the spirit embodied in the disaster relief encourage people to rebuild their lives.

Chinese president Hu Jintao said, "Now, China is under the severe test of the global financial crisis and in a crucial period of development. We should keep expanding domestic demand and keep the economy running smoothly and stably. At the same time, we should also ensure people's livelihoods by improving education, medical services and other public service to establish better homes for everyone."

People in Sichuan have faced up to a new life with help from people all over the world. Last year, it was a place of infinite sadness and pain. Now, it's a place of revival and hope. With persistence, strength and dedication, the people are determined that Sichuan will once again be a place of joy and prosperity.
