Karzai says he wants to run again to serve the Afghan people, though he admits there have been some mistakes over the past seven years. He says his aims are to improve people's living standards and bring peace and stability.

The serving President was accompanied by Defense Minister Mohammad Qasim Fahim and second Vice President Mohammad Karim Khalili amid tight security. Karzai has nominated Fahim and Khalili as his two vice presidential running mates.
