Bilateral ties and the global economic downturn were high on the agenda for talks between Premier Wen Jiabao and his Japanese counterpart Taro Aso.

Wen said China-Japan relations had progressed with the joint efforts from both sides. But he called on both countries to maintain their development to further cement relations, and hoped Japan could abide by its promise to carefully handle historical issues.

Aso suggested the two countries strengthen mutual trust and deepen communication through exchanges between the youth of both sides.

Premier Wen stressed that, amid the global economic crisis, the most important things are to stabilize bilateral trade, expand cooperation in the region, and fight against trade protectionism.

As for the ongoing swine flu pandemic, Wen Jiabao told Aso that China has taken necessary measures to prevent the spreading of the virus in the country. China is also willing to cooperate with the international community to protect people's health and safety.
