The party has been in government for more than 17 years, and is seen as responsible for creating the deregulated financial system that allowed the banking sector to grow to 10 times the national budget.

A survey showed that 10 per cent of those who voted for the IP in the last parliamentary elections in 2007 would turn in a blank ballot on Saturday. Most polls are predicting the Left-Green Movement and the Social-Democratic Alliance will get a strong majority in the Althingi, the Icelandic Parliament.
