The snow storm has also paralyzed vehicles on Sakhalin. Passengers were unable to leave the trains, and the nearest food store is said to be 17 kilometers away, but there was no way of getting there.

A Russian news agency said more than 200 emergency workers were clearing drifts of up to 4 meters high and had delivered water and food. Food on the train was given out to passengers, but it consisted of dried ingredients which required boiled water to make it edible and there was not enough water.
