Mexico celebrate spring equinox

Visitors began arriving before dawn at the massive pyramids in Teotihuacan (tay-o-tee-wa-kan) in Mexico on Saturday to celebrate the spring equinox. That's when the sun crosses the Earth's equator, making day and night approximately of equal length over much of the planet.

Many came dressed in white shirts and trousers adorned with red belts or headbands. They are the traditional colors that -- according to pre-Hispanic tradition -- helps the wearer better absorb the good energy that peaks during the equinox. Thousands made the steep climb up the Pyramid of the Sun, the larger of two pyramids at the site. One site official handling traffic flow estimated that by 10 am local time, 12-thousand people had come through.

In addition to tourists, groups of pre-Hispanic dancers also gathered to parade and play music up and down the Avenue of the Dead. That's a large thoroughfare that connects the various complexes of the site.
