Lawmakers from Henan province came early to help migrant workers get jobs. Usually, the NPC session is only a time to review and debate policies.
This year has seen a growing number of citizens participating in the policy-making process. Premier Wen Jiabao held his first online chat. More than 38 thousand questions were posted on the online forum, covering employment and health care and everything in between.
NPC deputy from Anhui, Song Lihua, said, "This shows the government places importance on people's livelihood, and an improvement of political democracy."
NPC deputy from Henan, Gao Hongzhi, said, "The supervisory role of the NPC will become more important, and shifting from the former macro supervision to more detailed policies."
China believes that the political reform and opening up is the key choice determining the country's future, and a powerful weapon in fighting the financial crisis.
This annual political session is a window into economic trends and democratic politics in China. This year's meeting was a display of unity, with deputies standing together against the threat of economic gloom. The NPC also agreed that all draft laws under deliberation should be released on the Internet for public scrutiny. Still, the Chinese people are hoping that the legislative body's supervisory role over the government will become more and more transparent over time.
