The Boeing 737-800 en route from Istanbul to Amsterdam slammed into a muddy field while attempting to land at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

It broke into three pieces on impact about three kilometers short of the airport's runway.

Ineke Van Der Zande, Medical Relief Coordinator, said, "Nine people have died. Twenty-five passengers are really severely wounded and 24 passengers have light injuries."

The vast majority of those on board survived, as there was no explosion or fire when the plane crashed.
