Outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert visited Russia last year to seek assurances that Israel's security would not be threatened by Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Lavrov expressed hope the new Israeli government would favor "continuity" in Israeli-Russian relations and continue efforts towards a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Later, Lavrov met with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.
