UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on developed nations to announce ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Ban said the move is necessary to produce an agreement at the upcoming Copenhagen round of climate change talks. He made the remarks at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit in India.

At the annual conference, Ban Ki-moon urged developed countries to make stronger efforts to reduce emissions.

Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, said, "Copenhagen must clarify commitments of developed countries to reduce their emissions by setting ambitious mid-term targets with credible baselines."

Ban also said developing countries need to clarify what efforts they are prepared to make to battle climate change.

Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, said, "Secondly, Copenhagen must advance on the issue of financing the mitigation and adaptation needs of developing nations."

The UN chief was at the conference to receive a Sustainable Development Leadership Award.

At the same event, India's external affairs minister said large amount of money should be used to tackle climate change in an effort similar to the response to the global financial crisis.

Pranab Mukherjee, Indian External Affairs Minister, said, "This could include a global fund to promote renewable energy both in terms of application of existing technologies as well as research and development into new and innovative technology."

The conference was the midway point in a two-year negotiation intended to produce a new climate treaty to control emissions of greenhouse gases after 2012, when the current Kyoto Protocol expires.
