Severe drought continues hitting China

The lack of rainfall since last winter has created a severe drought in 15 provinces of China, affecting more than 140 million mu, or 9.3 million hectares of wheat. Authorities say drought is affecting 40 million mu more than the same period last winter, and have called for efforts to coordinate relief work.

The Ministry of Agriculture says that by February 3rd, wheat crops in six major grain production provinces were hit by drought. Nearly one third of them are severely affected. The ministry expects the drought to continue, as no rain has been forecast for the next seven days.
