Performers wearing Qing dynasty costumes are whipping a clay ox in front of a yamen, a former dynasty government office, during a seasonal performance in Neixiang county, Henan Province on Wednesday, February 4, 2009. Wednesday marks the first solar term on the Chinese lunar calendar, known as "Lichun", literally the beginning of spring. In Chinese tradition, royal officials would whip the "Spring Ox" on the first day of spring to signify the start of a new solar year. [Photo: cnsphoto] |
