China and Switzerland have decided to begin a joint feasibility study on creating a bilateral free trade zone. The study will be in preparation for formally launching negotiations on the issue. The decision was made during talks between visiting Chinese premier Wen Jiabao and President of the Swiss Confederation Hans-Rudolf Merz on Tuesday.

This is Wen Jiabao's first visit to Switzerland since he assuming the post of Chinese Premier.

During Tuesday's talks with Merz, Wen Jiabao said China values the traditional friendship with Switzerland. He also said China is ready to promote high-level exchanges and expand cooperation.

For his part, Merz said Switzerland is hoping to strengthen political dialogue as well as practical cooperation with China.

The ongoing global financial crisis was the focus of the meeting. The two leaders also briefed each other on the policies and measures the two countries are taking relating to the crisis.

Both sides agreed that both sides must strive to work closely together to navigate through difficulties posed by the global economic downturn.
