Mitchell, a former senator, is on a week-long trip that will also take him to Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, France and Britain. He met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit and is due to meet President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday.

Obama said on Tuesday the time is ripe to resume Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. He says his administration will adopt a more comprehensive approach in its ties with the Muslim world.
