Obama promoting Mideast peace

US President Barack Obama is wasting no time in signaling his willingness to immediately engage in the vexing Middle East peace process. On Wednesday, he called on four allies in the region to support a fragile ceasefire.

Obama made phone calls to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Jordan's King Abdullah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. In the West Bank, Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, confirmed that Abbas had spoken with Obama.

Saeb Erekat, Chief Palestinian negotiator, said, "US President Barack Obama called President Mahmoud Abbas today and informed him that him and his administration would stay the course and will go ahead with the peace process immediately and in full partnership of the Palestinian Authority and President Abu Mazen. President Abbas on his part reiterated his commitment and full partnership with President Obama in order to continue with the peace process. In order to achieve a comprehensive, lasting, just peace in the region in accordance with international legality and our peace initiative."
