Special Report:   Inauguration of Barack Obama

SINGAPORE, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's President S. R. Nathan Tuesday night sent a congratulation letter to Barack Obama on his inauguration as the 44th President of the United States.

The President said that Obama's inauguration comes at a time when there are many challenges facing the United States and the rest of the world.

"Many countries that are grappling with the consequences of the global economic downturn will be looking to the United States for leadership in addressing the global economic situation, as well as security and environmental challenges," he said, adding that under Obama's able leadership, the United States will be able to respond effectively to the various challenges both domestically and internationally.

Singapore's president said relations between Singapore and the United States have been longstanding, close, multi-faceted and versatile, and he looks forward to Obama's visit to Singapore in November 2009 for the APEC Summit.
