Already, Washington has seen four days of parties, shadowed at every turn by layer upon layer of extra security. Revellers eager to get a head start on the celebrations are already in town.

The FBI has been planning for the inauguration since June. Specially equipped trucks, a bomb-detecting robot, canisters with hundreds of gallons of water ready to disrupt a car bomb, and other emergency response tools have been set up near the FBI's Washington field office.

However, a special agent in charge of counter-terrorism says there has been no credible intelligence warning of any attack.
