Meanwhile, at a joint news conference with European leaders who traveled to the region on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he hopes to withdraw all his country's forces from the Gaza Strip as soon as possible.

He said if the ceasefire should hold, there is no reason for Israeli troops to remain in the Gaza Strip, since Israel didn't set out to conquer the territory.

But he wants assurances that a new cease-fire with Hamas will last, and there's no longer any security threat to southern Israel.
