No bird flu epidemics found in Shanxi, Hunan

China's Ministry of Agriculture says no bird flu epidemics have been found in either Shanxi or Hunan province after a 2-year-old girl was confirmed to have been infected with the H5N1 strain of the virus.

The Ministry is urging local veterinary departments to  disinfect all major poultry markets.

The girl was found ill in Hunan on January 7th. Four days later, her grandparents took her to Luliang City in Shanxi, where she was hospitalized. The girl remains in critical condition. 67 people who have been in close contact with her are under medical observation, but none has been found ill so far.

The Ministry is urging local veterinary departments to disinfect all major poultry markets. It's also calling for heightened vigilance nationwide, especially in areas running high risk of bird flu outbreak.
