For most Chinese, a train ticket home during the annual holiday rush is one of the hardest-won commodities. The peak season during the Lunar New Year holiday sees huge crowds of people queuing in front of railway stations for tickets, despite freezing temperatures.

On Sunday, transport departments launched a 40-day Spring Festival plan to ensure an estimated 2.3 billion journeys are made safely. The Ministry of Railways is vowing to ease the travel peak in the coming years.
