A British and a Spanish journalist were released in good health on Sunday, after nearly six weeks in captivity in northern Somalia.

39-year-old reporter Colin Freeman was working for the British newspaper The Sunday Telegraph, and 34-year-old freelance photographer Jose Cendon was working on a piracy story, when the two men were kidnapped together on November 26th.

The Sunday Telegraph's publisher has confirmed the two journalists' release, but it would not say whether a ransom had been paid.

Meanwhile, the Security Minister of the northern Somali region has expressed sadness over the suffering inflicted on the journalists, and said his government had done its best to gain them their freedom.

Freeman said he and his colleague are grateful to all those who had worked for their release.
