Protest disrupts Athens countdown to New Year

New Year celebrations in Athens were interrupted by rallying protesters, as the city counted down to 2009.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the Parliament building. They closed off the main roads around the city square, where the mayor was bringing in the New Year in front of the city's Christmas tree. Police circled the square to prevent protesters from reaching the festivities.

Athens has seen a wave of demonstrations since December 6th, sparked by the killing of a teenager by police.
