Power cut darkens Obama´s Hawaiian vacation

The Hawaiian island of Oahu, including the resort where US President-elect Barack Obama is vacationing, has had a major blackout -- probably caused by a lightning strike.

Eyewitnesses say electricity in Obama's holiday compound was knocked out, and workers scrambled to set up an emergency generator. The blackout left nearly one million people in the dark, with residents being urged to stay home to conserve water. Traffic was snarled on major roads in the Hawaiian capital of Honolulu.

Residents say this was the largest power outage since an earthquake caused a major blackout in October 2006.
