The Associated Press says this mission marks a departure from traditional Chinese naval policy and the move is welcomed by U.S. Pentagon. Pentagon spokesman Major Stewart Upton said " We look forward to working with the Chinese both bilaterally and multilaterally on this challenge to international security."

AFP says combating pirates is not a task of one or two countries, but a responsibility of the whole world. China's decision to join this mission not only contributes to international security, but also shows the determination of the international community to combat the pirates.

Singapore's most influential Chinese newspaper United Morning Post says China's dispatch of naval ships to Somalia shows its confidence and determination in fighting pirates. It also means China has grown into a mature power and is beginning to bear more responsibility in maintaining global security.

Germany's weekly magazine Spiegel commends the international cooperation in fighting piracy. It says China and some European countries have made their contributions and their concerted efforts will protect ships in the Gulf of Aden and maintain the global security.
