Israel's cabinet met on Sunday as a barrage of rockets fired from Gaza hit Israeli towns. Meanwhile, the Israeli air force responded with a missile strike as violence surged after the expiration of a shaky truce.

One rocket scored a direct hit on a house in the town of Sderot. Another rocket landed in an industrial zone in Ashkelon, 16 kilometers north of Gaza.

The Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad took responsibility for Sunday's rocket fire.

Fawzi Barhoum, Hamas Spokesman, said, "Every Zionist usurper and Zionist soldier should pay the same price our Palestinian people paid because of the aggression committed by the government of the Zionist occupation."
