December 18th 1999. In 48 hours, Macao will be returned to the motherland, and the city is getting ready to put on a gala to celebrate the historic occasion.

Stage director Zhang Liang said, "The lighting, stage and actors are already in place. We have made full preparations and everyone is looking forward to the exciting moment."

Although it was the coldest day of winter, the chilliness couldn't lessen the performers' enthusiasm.

Singer Yang Hongji said, "I am very excited. And everyone is excited. I am lucky because I can stay in Tiananmen square to witness the countdown now and then the hand-over in 48 hours. "

Portuguese traders first settled in Macao in the 16th century. After over 400 years of Portuguese rule, China and Portugal reached a joint declaration in the 1980s, paving the way for Macao's return.
