Two senior leaders of a banned Pakistani militant group are now suspected of orchestrating last week's deadly incident.

Security forces swarmed the international airport in New Delhi after three rounds of firing were heard early Friday morning. Initial reports from the BBC said six gunmen had been shot and killed by security forces at the airport. But a later report said police denied anyone was injured.

An airport alert issued on Thursday warned of possible airborne attacks and focused on three major airports - New Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai. No details about the threat were released, but security was stepped up across India.

Heavily armed guards manned roadblocks outside airports, while others patrolled inside airport buildings among passengers.

Several extra layers of security were set up and some passengers had bags scanned with devices to check for explosives before entering terminals.
