The aim of the Russian president's visit to Rio was to sign exchange treaties in the areas of commerce, military and energy technologies as well as sports between the two countries.

Brazil is Russia's largest commercial partner in Latin America. The two presidents said in a joint statement that the summit involving Brazil, Russia, India and China - the so-called BRIC nations - will be held in 2009.

Medvedev also visited the headquarters of the Brazilian oil company, Petrobras. This is Medvedev's first tour in Latin America.

He is now in Venezuela, where joint military exercises are set to be conducted. Medvedev is expected in Cuba on Thursday.
