British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has urged the United States to avoid moving toward protectionism in response to the world financial crisis.

Brown is in Washington for Saturday's Group 20 summit. He also says the UK will be Washington's closest ally in dealing with the economic slowdown.

Gordon Brown, British Prime Minister, said, "My central argument this evening is that the alliance between Britain and America and more broadly between Europe and America, can and must provide leadership in this. Not in order to make and impose the rules ourselves but to lead and broaden the global effort to build a stronger and more secure and more equitable international order And as a truly global society."
