Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao chaired this morning's session, which was attended by leaders and representatives from the 45 ASEM members.

Topping the agenda were discussions about food security and international cooperation in disaster relief.

In his key-note address, Wen Jiabao said food security problems affect the development and stability of ASEM members, as well as the realization of the UN millennium development goals.

Premier Wen noted that many ASEM members are grain producers and exporters.

Many of them are rich in agricultural production experience and use advanced technology.

The premier said ASEM members should increase investment in agriculture, optimize grain trade and maintain world food security with finance, trade, assistance and environmental protection measures.

Wen Jiabao said disaster prevention is a common challenge for ASEM members.

He said ASEM should strengthen exchanges, technological cooperation and personnel training to improve risk assessment capabilities, emergency rescue and relief, as well as post-disaster reconstruction.
