Chinese leaders meet ASEM guests

Friday also saw a breakfast meeting attended by leaders from ASEAN countries, China, Japan and South Korea. Leaders discussed the impact of the financial crisis on East Asian countries. They agreed to enhance coordination and cooperation to maintain financial stability in the region.
Premier Wen Jiabao also met with a number of foreign leaders to talk about bilateral and international issues. During a meeting with Austrian Federal Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer, Wen Jiabao called for the two countries to increase cooperation in environmental protection. Wen Jiabao expressed wishes that China could learn from Austria's technology and experience in the field.
While meeting with his Cambodian counterpart, Hun Sen, Wen Jiabao said the two countries should enhance cooperation in bilateral and regional affairs.
Similar calls were heard in meetings between Wen Jiabao and other leaders, including Thai Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat and Slovenian President Danilo Turk.
Wen Jiabao emphasized the issue of food safety when talking to Japanese Prime Minster Taro Aso. He said the Chinese government is responsible for dealing with issues concerning food safety, and is willing to increase cooperation with Japan in this field.
Wen Jiabao also met with EU Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso. Both leaders agreed to promote economic and political ties, and strengthen coordination in maintaining global financial stability.
