According to local forecasters, Kalmaegi is moving northwest from Hualien County, bringing winds gusting more than 100 kilometres per hour at its center.

Forecasters predict Kalmaegi will dump heavy rains in northern and eastern Taiwan. The public have been warned to stay away from shores along the eastern coasts. Storm warnings have been issued in several areas including Taipei, Hualien and Nantou.

On the Chinese mainland, the State flood control authorities say Typhoon Kalmaegi is likely to land in east China's Zhejiang Province on Friday evening or Saturday morning. The authorities have launched a level-three flood control emergency response mechanism to cope with the typhoon.
