96,000 students are from Sichuan Province, and 24,000 from Gansu Province. They make up just over one percent of all senior high school graduates attending the exam this year. Many of the students from quake-hit areas are taking the exams in makeshift houses.

Authorities say emergency response plans will help students escape from dangers if a strong aftershock hits the areas. The Ministry of Education has asked the country's one-thousand-plus institutions of higher learning to increase their enrollment quota for the quake-hit areas.
