The 320 state highway runs from Shanghai to the border city of Ruili, at the southwesternmost tip of Yunnan province. The highway ends less than 200 kilometers from the Golden Triangle, a notorious drug source. The section of the highway in Ruili has understandably become the frontline of China's crack down on cross-border drug trade.

Long-haul passenger buses or trucks passing here must stop for security checks.

It was just another ordinary morning at the Jiangqiao check station in Ruili. Long-haul passenger buses or trucks passing here must stop for security checks.

A police hound searching this bus suddenly became very agitated. It crawled along the sleeping area in the rear of the bus, barked loudly and scratched the air-conditioner with its paws. A police officer removed the cover and found this plastic bag.

Luo Xiangbing, police officer of Jiangqiao Check Station, Ruili, said, "There are about 700 grams of drugs in this plastic bag."

Not far from Ruili is Dehong, another border city where police are targeting the drug trade. A ride through downtown along the 320 state highway led to the Mukang check station. Situated at a highway exit, the check station monitors all vehicles crossing the border. And today, police officers detected suspicious signs on this long-haul bus.

Huang Tao, head of Mukang Check Station, Dehong, said, "This is a typical case. Drug traffickers use the cargo cabin of the bus to hide drugs, in order to reduce the costs of delivery."

The Mukang check station was founded in 1978. The State Council and the Central Military Commission have repeatedly granted it top honors for its outstanding achievements. 30 years on, the police officers are still working hard to stop all drug trafficking along the borders.
