French President Nicolas Sarkozy says his country will always stand by Israel against those who call for its destruction. Sarkozy has been visiting jerusalem during his three-day visit -- the first trip to Israel by a French president in a dozen years.

Speaking at a special session of Israel's parliament, Sarkozy warned that a nuclear-armed Iran is unacceptable to France.

Sarkozy said, "The Iranian military nuclear program requires a very firm reaction from the international community. Israel must know that it does not stand alone. Iran holding a nuclear weapon is unacceptable for my country. Anyone trying to destroy Israel will find France blocking the way."
