At noon on Friday, heavy thunderstorms blackened the sky over the southern city of Shenzhen. The rare scene lasted 20 minutes.

Elsewhere in Guangdong province, powerful rainstorms also caused flooding in the cities of Huizhou and Heyuan.

Bad weather in Guizhou province affected more than 130,000 people.

A total of 19 cities and counties were flooded as a new round of downpours began to hit the province on Thursday night. The rain also disrupted traffic on an expressway linking Guizhou and Guangxi.

In the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, over seven-hundred houses collapsed and more than 13,000 hectares of crops were battered. The rain also caused landslides in some areas.

Losses there are estimated at 60 million yuan, or 8.6 million US dollars.

The forecast from the China Meteorological Administration says the torrential rain in southern China is likely to continue in the coming days. It also warns this could cause flooding, mudflows and landslides.
